About compounded medications

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing; they are not established as equivalent to FDA-approved medicines. Compounding is subject to federal and state law and should only be considered when an individual patient’s medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug. Availability is not assured. A licensed provider must evaluate eligibility, medication and dosing. Prescription treatment is not appropriate for everyone. Results vary.

FDA has reported dosing errors and other safety concerns with compounded GLP-1 products, including semaglutide salt forms and inadequate refrigeration during shipping. Follow the prescribing provider’s and dispensing pharmacy’s instructions, and ask them about adverse effects, storage, dosing and alternatives.
